Time Out Market – Lisbon
Lisbon might be the oldest western-European city but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s not a hub of vibrant modernity and buzz. Case in point, the Time Out Market set up in 2014 by journalists at Time Out Portugal, an idea that has become one of the highlights of any visit to the city and also a hot spot for locals.
The huge indoor market space holds 24 restaurants, 8 bars, a dozen shops featuring local vendors and even live music. It really is incredible. I’m not talking your standard food court hall with typical High Street chains battling for custom nor am I talking a Borough Market concept of different stalls at extortionate prices.
This market sees leading chefs (including Michelin Star ones) with stalls offering the best steaks, seafood, burgers, Asian dishes, sushi, pastries, charcuteries and bars – all in one beautifully designed modern space and completely affordable – we saw locals having their working lunch there. The idea has not only succeeded but has become a standout attraction for not just the area but the city, and for tourists and locals alike. Some of the Lisbon’s best known and longest-running market vendors of meat, fish, fruit and flowers are there allowing you to take home produce as well as eat prepared food on-site. It was so refreshing to be faced with this quality of independent offers in one site, a celebration of diverse local talent, quality and styles. The idea has become so popular that Time Out London has announced a new one in Shoreditch will open and follow suit- I imagine a larger Box Park-esq concept that does so well.
Hopefully it embraces the inclusive philosophy like that of Lisbon and we start to see a new-wave of quality that is accessible and thriving.
